Mary Calhoun’s “Magic in the Alley” seems to have gotten forgotten over the years which is a shame because it is wonderfully well written, whimsical and full of imagination. Did I say there’s a witch and an elf and a mermaid. Did I mention there’s an invisibility cloak.
There is – and this was written in !5/5(8). Long before Harry Potter and his ilk, there was already Magic in the Alley. Mary Calhoun is a prolific and lovely writer of children's books (see her Katie John books and The House of Thirty Cats for more examples) but this title is probably her very best/5.
